Beginning in 1983, Ponacka Alumni have been raising money to send less privileged boys to Ponacka. The boys are selected from the Big Brothers organization in Peterborough and most attend for several years.
In 2012, we will celebrate the 30th year of the SOS program! The three Legacy brothers will be returning to Ponacka next summer. Jeff will be a fourth year camper, at age14, Nathan, a third year camper, at age 13 and Mitchell, at 10 years old, will be returning for his second summer. At the end of the 2011 campaign, just over $9,000.00 had been raised, thanks to generous alumni. Ponacka continues to offer a 25% discount.
Excerpts from 2011 letters, thanking the donors,
"Thank you for paying for me to come here. I learned to do many different activities like hockey, soccer, nature, drama, archery and starting a fire. I got to learn to make a big fire. My hockey team made it to the semi finals. For nature, we went on a hike and I found a red neck salamander. We went on canoe trip in a war canoe and when we got there, we set up the tents and then we went crayfish hunting and toad hunting. The night was bright".
"My favourite activities are sailing, archery and wood working. I really like camp and I want to be a counselor. Trip was really fun but it was really tyring. I'm very gratefull you sent me to camp. I think I will miss everyone I met at camp during the school year".
"I did 3 weeks of canoeing, sailing and riding. I have 2 new people in my tent. I went to the Adirondacks trip for 5 days. We stayed in a lean to for the nights. We hiked Mount Marcy, Mount Hovenburg and Mount Algonquin. For riding, I am going for my Senior Mustang. Next year, I hope to pass my Bronze 4 at sailing. I am having a great time at camp this year. Thank you very much for sending me".
